Signs you need restroom remodel

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting looked at before it becomes a bigger job.

You want to move a toilet, tub, or shower rather than replace it in place

Rough-in comes before finishes

Drain, waste, vent, and supply positions decide where fixtures can go. Settling that first is what stops a tile layout from being redesigned around a pipe halfway through.

Replace what the wall will cover

An open wall is the cheapest access you will ever get to the supply lines and shutoffs behind a fixture. Anything at the end of its life is worth replacing while it is reachable.

Pressure test before it is closed

Supply and drain lines are tested while everything is still visible. Finding a weeping joint after the tile is set turns a small fix into a demolition job.

Can I move the toilet or shower to a different spot?

Usually yes, but it depends on where the drain, waste, and vent lines run and on whether they sit in a slab or above a crawl space. Moving a fixture means relocating drainage, which is why the rough-in is settled before the tile layout rather than after it.

Should I replace supply lines while the wall is open?

It is worth serious consideration. An open wall is the cheapest access you will ever have to the supply lines, shutoffs, and valves behind a fixture. Anything already near the end of its life is far cheaper to replace now than after new tile is set over it.
