If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting looked at before it becomes a bigger job.

A water bill that climbs with no change in how much water you use

The sound of running water when every fixture is off

A warm patch on a slab floor, which often means a hot water line below it

Musty smell, or paint and flooring lifting for no visible reason

The water meter dial still creeping with the whole house shut off

Cracks appearing in a slab, or a section of foundation staying damp

So you know what you are paying for, and what questions are worth asking any plumber who quotes it.

Confirm there is a leak at all

Before anything is opened up, the system is isolated and pressure tested. That separates a genuine leak from a failing meter, an irrigation line, or a fixture left running.

Locate it without demolition

Acoustic listening equipment, pressure testing, and thermal and moisture readings narrow a leak to a spot rather than a room. This is what keeps the access hole small, and it is the difference between one repair and a wall of drywall.

Repair it, and read what it tells you

One pinhole in old pipe is a repair. Several across the same system usually means the pipe itself is at the end of its life, and that is the point at which a repipe stops being the expensive option.

Finding hidden leaks before they become damage.

How can I tell if I have a hidden leak?

The usual signs are a water bill that climbs with no change in usage, the sound of running water when everything is off, a warm patch on a slab floor, a musty smell, or paint and flooring lifting for no visible reason. A simple check is to shut off every fixture and watch the water meter. If it is still moving, water is going somewhere.

Do you have to break through walls or floors to find it?

That is exactly what detection equipment is meant to avoid. Acoustic listening, pressure testing, and thermal and moisture readings narrow a leak down to a spot rather than a room, so access can be opened at one point instead of along a wall. What is a slab leak?

A leak in a water line running beneath the concrete foundation. Because the pipe is under the slab, the water usually appears somewhere other than the leak, which is why locating it accurately matters before anything is opened up. Repair may be possible from above, or through tunneling from outside the foundation where the floor above is finished.

I have had several leaks in one year. Is that normal?

No, and it is usually a signal rather than a coincidence. Repeated leaks across the same system generally mean the pipe itself is near the end of its service life, at which point continuing to repair costs more over time than replacing the supply lines.
